Gentle care for sensitive facial skin
Very dry and sensitive skin can have many causes. It often results from an alteration of the skin's lipid barrier, which normally protects our skin from drying out by promoting the absorption of liquids, retaining them, and preventing the skin from releasing too much moisture into the air. When this barrier is altered, it can no longer fulfill its role properly and the skin dries out. On the face, the skin is particularly thin and sensitive, and we often touch our face unconsciously with our hands, which are in contact with the environment all day and can accumulate germs, allergens, and irritants. Gentle and delicate cleansing is therefore essential to relieve the symptoms of sensitive and dry skin.
Possible symptoms of very dry skin:
- The skin is very dry and feels tight.
- The more it lacks moisture, the more chapped it becomes.
- Very dry skin begins to flake.
- Very dry skin can lead to inflammation.
- Repeated daily moisturizing is generally necessary to relieve discomfort.
Signs of sensitive skin:
- It is irritated, requires care, can be reactive, and show signs of allergies.
- Sensitive skin reacts strongly to external stimuli.
There are even more benefits!
In addition to regulating hydration, the skin's lipid barrier fulfills another essential function: it prevents pathogens, irritants, and allergens from entering the body through the skin. However, if the skin is very dry and chapped, it also loses this protective function. This is particularly problematic when the people concerned suffer from a condition such as atopic dermatitis or allergies. In this case, allergens and other irritants can easily cross the skin barrier and cause inflammation, eczema, swelling, and redness more easily and frequently. Many potential irritants are actually harmless and therefore found everywhere in everyday life, but they cause allergic reactions in people with an atopic predisposition. This is especially the case with fragrances and preservatives contained in cosmetics. This is why it is particularly important for people suffering from so-called atopic conditions, such as atopic dermatitis and allergies, that cosmetics and skincare products do not contain potential triggers, but rather a limited number of selected ingredients which, on the one hand, are not known allergens and, on the other hand, strengthen the altered lipid barrier and hydrate the skin. Suitable ingredients include, for example, glycerin, ceramides, squalane, and triglycerides, like those contained in the PHYSIOGEL® Calming Relief gentle cleansing milk. In this way, the skin barrier can be strengthened while avoiding irritants, such as those found in many non-hypoallergenic products, that would aggravate the symptoms of very dry and sensitive skin.
Possible causes of very dry skin
But it is not only atopic dermatitis or allergies that can cause very dry skin. The causes are multiple, but often have the same consequence: the water balance and the supply of essential substances to the skin and lipid barrier are severely disrupted. These causes can lead to very dry skin:
- Cold, heat, sun, and low air humidity
- Diseases such as diabetes mellitus, atopic dermatitis, or hypothyroidism
- Unhealthy lifestyle, such as an unbalanced diet, insufficient fluid intake, smoking
- Stress and psychological burdens
- Inappropriate, overly tight clothing that causes excessive sweating and therefore greater fluid loss
- Regular contact with cleaning and disinfecting products and chemicals, for example as a hairdresser, doctor, nurse, cleaner
- Hormonal changes, for example during pregnancy or as part of taking the pill
- Advanced age
- Insufficient or excessive personal hygiene, ...
